“We are excited to partner with Mayor Winnecke, the City of Evansville, and Ivy Tech Community College to offer residents the opportunity to serve their community without worrying about taking time off without pay,” said Lee Turpen, AMR Operations Manager for Southern Indiana. “We are thrilled to offer a way to make a career in EMS more accessible, particularly as we face a national and local EMT shortage. This program alleviates the income barrier and will allow for more Evansville residents to launch a new, rewarding career.”

Since launching the “Earn While You Learn Program” in May 2018, AMR has graduated over 100 EMS professionals and has earned national recognition for the program by the American Ambulance Association. Similar programs have also been launched in New York, Massachusetts, Ohio and Missouri. With support from Mayor Winnecke, the Evansville program will allow for trainees to be full-time employees while taking the necessary certification courses to become emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The program has made a career in emergency medical services more accessible, ensuring that a candidate is financially stable while training.

“These trainees will soon be working alongside our firefighters and police officers,” said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. “We’re proud of our first responders. This collaborative initiative will allow more people to launch a career in EMS and keep our community safe.”

The Evansville program will be held in partnership with Ivy Tech’s Paramedic Science Program. Students will be enrolled in the summer EMT program at the school and AMR will pay for tuition, books and to on-board the trainees as full-time employees.

“We are proud to be a part of this opportunity to collaborate with AMR to increase the skills of AMR staff and provide a career pathway for employees,” said Kelly Cozart, interim chancellor at Ivy Tech Evansville.

AMR is seeking 10 candidates for its first EMS class, which is slated to begin late May 2020. Interested applicants should visit the AMR website www.amr.net and search for Requisition ID 2020-9067 under the Career section.
